COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland wrestling team will hold the annual Red & Black Wrestle-Offs Saturday at 2 p.m. in Comcast Pavilion.
The intrasquad scrimmage determines initial starters for Maryland’s regular-season opener – the Terrapin Duals on Nov. 6. The Terps had “challenge matches” this week to determine the pairings for Saturday’s exhibition, which are listed below.
Prior to the Wrestle-Offs, the Terrapins will honor all former Maryland wrestling captains. Those who would like to be recognized are encouraged to contact assistant coach Todd Beckerman at tfb@umd.edu. After the match, a social will be held in Heritage Hall.
The Terps have five returning starters, all of which are ranked by various wrestling publications heading into the season.
Josh Asper is ranked No. 5 at 165 pounds by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) and WrestlingReport.com. Mike Letts, the 2007 and 2008 ACC Champion at 174 pounds, is ranked fifth by Amateur Wrestling News.
Kyle John, a 2010 NCAA Qualifier at 157 pounds, is ranked 10th by WIN. At 141 pounds, 2008 ACC Champion Jon Kohler is ranked No. 32 by WrestlingReport, and the website tabs 184-pounder Corey Peltier No. 25 in his weight class.
